On the trip with me were my daughter(26) and my best friend (age withheld to protect the not-so-innocent).     Our hotel in Key West was right on Mallory Square so for a late lunch one day, we cut across the square to check out  El Meson de Pepe , a Cuban spot.  Once again, it was just fine. That  seemed to be the t rend of this trip, most of the food was ok, did its job to nutrify our bodies and line our tummies against the alcohol but not a lot of yumminess and joy to be had. As a group of self-proclaimed foodies (even though I have a ton of allergies), this was just a blah foodie trip for us. As part of my 50th Birthday Road Trip to the Florida Keys, we made reservations for the 1st night in Key West at Better Than Sex . There is no parking at the restaurant, so the daughter unit dropped me off out front and rode around to find a place to park. There is very limited parking in Key West and what is there you pay for and by pay, I mean like $10 for 2 hours type of pay and a 5–7-minute walk back to your destination. I most likely need knee surgery but I keep putting it off, so me and my cane were not hiking anywhere further than a minute or 2, lol. I digress. Better Than Sex – a big name to live up to. Too bad they really didn’t. I don’t know who they have had sex with, but I felt kinda bad for them. Not that the restaurant was bad, but it just was not, you know…better than sex. Part of my recent 50th birthday trip to the Florida Keys was a one night stay at Marina Del Mar Resort in Key Largo, Florida. We decided to break up the drive with a one night stay in Key Largo. We should have kept driving. I will break this review out into these sub sections: Location, Staff, Room, Food, Amenities and Final Thoughts. photo by Marina Del Mar Location : Rating - 5 out of 10 Marina Del Mar is pretty easy to find even though it is tucked back off the main road in a residential area along the marina. There is not much around but it is Key Largo so not like anything is really far. But if you do not have a car, that could be an issue. The marina was pretty and I got some nice shots there. Much nicer and more picturesque locations to stay in Key Largo than here. El kiddo and I drove down, about a 7.5 hr trip that we did break up into 2 days to check out Key Largo and the BFF flew in the day after we got there from Jersey (Key West Airport was a saga for another post!). photo by Ocean Key Resort I chose this hotel primarily due to location, it is right next to Mallory Square at the end of Duval Street and it has ocean front rooms. Had to splurge as it was my milestone birthday - the big 5-0! So we went for it with a one bedroom ocean front suite. Since we drove down, we had to valet park as that is the only parking option at Ocean Key.
